The collector in me wanted to buy up every out-of-print book that contains Willard Mullin's unbelievably dynamic drawings, but I wised up and whipped out the ol' library card instead!
I managed to find a bunch of beautiful books that I borrowed from the Los Angeles public library (you can do it all online) and subsequently scanned them for sharing with everybody here on the CartoonSNAP blog! |

WOWOWOW! I definitely vote to keep the Willard Mullins rolling in!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Mullins super loose linework. I think it's such a talent to be loose, but still retain solidity. All my favorites do it (Kley, Davis, Eisner, etc.). That's something I really struggle with, Sherm. Is that something that just comes with time, you think?
"I understand he can sing." Haha, awesome awesome awesome. Thanks so much for taking your time and sharing, Sherm! Started my morning off right!
Exciting craziness over takes me every time I see his stuff!
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting it Sherm.
Hey there Chris -- your comparison to Heinrich Kley is dead on. I never thought of that before.
ReplyDeleteHi Vincent -- glad you like the Mullin goodness!
So far there haven't been as many comments as Willard Mullin deserves, but I've got some great drawings on deck, and I'll post them if we get just ONE more comment...any takers?
damn, that last image is amazing, the knocked out boxer, such great line energy and equally fantastic dynamic composition.
ReplyDeletewell I'm throwing my hat in too, Sherm. So I'm taking that comment offer, so lets see some sweet horse racing and football action drawings.
thanks sherm.
All right, Mike! Thanks for putting us over the top on the Willard Mullin comment drive. I will start working on that next Mullin post tonight, and I hope to have it online in a few days (or as soon as Time Warner fixes my Internet connection, whichever comes first)
ReplyDeleteStay tuned, Mullin fans!
I was forever influenced by a sports book, the name of which escapes me, when my Aunt Catherine gave it to me for Christmas. The book was filled with Mullins' illustrations and sent me on a lifetime of amateur cartooning. Mr. Mullin has enriched my life and he deserves a masters place in his field
